EXCLUSIVE: Alfreton Town player, and former Grimsby Town player, Bradley Wood chats to me about his penalty that he converted against Barnet that left Grimsby Town just 1 point off the top spot.
Former Grimsby Town fans favourite, Bradley Wood, says he was "heartwarmed" to see the horde of Grimsby Town fans praise and thank him after blowing the Vanarama Conference title race wide open.
Wood scored a 90th minute penalty against Barnet, to grab a last-gasp draw. This meant Barnet's lead at the top of the table was reduced to just 1 point. With Grimsby narrowly behind The Bees, Grimsby fans were quick to contact the Alfreton player.
"I had over 1000 notifications through the day/night", he said. "It was heartwarming."
When asked on his thoughts leading up to the game, he said "I've been messaging a few mates all week. They were asking me to do Grimsby a favour and that Grimsby would do us [Alfreton Town] a favour by beating Welling."
Welling United sit 7 points below Alfreton, Wood's current team, with a game in hand. A Welling win against Grimsby would have closed that gap to just 4 points.
Alfreton are currently one place outside the relegation zone, while Welling are firmly in the relegation zone, sitting in 22nd.
I then asked whether he thought of Grimsby Town when he stepped up to take the penalty, and the impact it would have on the title race. Wood said, "Yeah of course. I knew it would have a big impact on the title race but first of all it needed to be put away, to ensure a point for Alfreton, to stay in the division."
Finally, when asked if he would ever welcome the idea of joining The Mariners for a second time, he said, "Of course I would. Without any doubt!"
