In an exclusive interview with me, Carl Magnay reveals Grimsby are hungry for the title, although it is still Barnet's to lose
Magnay joined The Mariners on a one-year-deal at the start of the season from Gateshead, and was soon to become one of Grimsby's best acquisitions since their 5 years in the Conference, and also a firm fans favourite.
After Grimsby's impressive victory away at Welling, Magnay thought it was a "solid, professional performance."
"I thought it was a solid professional performance, exactly what's required at this stage of the season."
When asked if the Macclesfield/Bristol Rovers was an extra bit of motivation to get the three points, the full-back replied, "We didn't know the final score from Macclesfield/Bristol Rovers game and can honestly say it's not our concern."
"Our concern is Grimsby Town and doing what needs to be done. If you start worrying about about other teams that's a sign of weakness in our eyes. We'll remain focused on us until the final whistle of this season and see where it takes us."
Despite being 1 point behind leaders, Barnet, Magnay still believes they can win the title.
"We've launched ourselves into a position where it's more than possible, because of points dropped around us. Sometimes I can't sleep at night thinking about possible scenarios in which way it might happen."
However, Magnay insisted there was a lot of hard work still to be done and there is "no cockiness or over-confidence" within the squad. He pledges that they will go about their business "very workmanlike" but says, "It's still Barnet's to lose so we certainly aren't getting ahead of ourselves."
"Barnet are top of the league and ourselves and Bristol are chasing."
Although he says it's great to hear the fans sing chants such as 'We are going up', he stresses that the job is far from done and there are some tough fixtures ahead for The Mariners.
"A lot can change between now and the end of the season, so it's one game at a time for us."
I then questioned Magnay about the away support Grimsby have had this season, and he replied, "Our away support has been nothing short of incredible all season so they deserve to sing whatever they want, but as players we have to deliver on the pitch, so we can't read too much into that."
"We [fans and players] are becoming a united force. There's a lot of respect between the players and the fans. To sell 2500 tickets to an away game at this level is unique, and that's what the fans are. They're our strength and we feed off them. I hope we can deliver a league title and promotion for them, they deserve it."
Magnay also went on to say that in a worse case scenario of only making the play-offs that "any game in the play-offs is a tough one, but we haven't paid that any attention yet. We want to win the league."
The right-back who can also play anywhere in the back-line, has made 39 appearances for Grimsby this season, chipping in with a goal as well.
