Grimsby Town's assistant manager, Chris Doig says he is "very pleased" to beat Welling, although Barnet are "still in the driving seat" for the Vanarama Conference title.
After Grimsby's 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Welling United, Chris Doig spoke to me, exclusively.
The assistant manager, come player, says he wasn't relieved to win, but very pleased.
Grimsby were the best team on the day, and deserved the 3 points, according to Doig. He believes this was thanks to a "professional performance".
Doig then went on to confirm that there were no injuries but "a few bumps and bruises." However, the former Northampton Town, York City and Nottingham Forest player believes "it's to be expected from a team as committed as ours."
Fellow promotion contenders, Bristol Rovers, faced Macclesfield Town, who still have a slim chance of winning the title, in an early kick-off, that was televised on BT Sport. The outcome was ideal for The Mariners, and the fans were delighted. However, Chris Doig was focussing on his team.
"If I'm honest, I didn't know the Macclesfield/Bristol Rovers until after the game," he said. "I'm genuinely not interested in other teams."
"We can only influence our own performance, so that's all I concentrate on."
"There's no point worrying about anyone else if we don't do the job ourselves."
When asked if the Barnet's draw against Alfreton and Bristol Rovers' draw against Macclesfield left Grimsby with a more realistic chance of clinching the title, Doig replied, "Ultimately we are in a better position now than we were before the start of the game at Welling."
He then went on to say, "But Barnet are still in the driving seat and still the team to catch."
"We are only focussed on our next game against Gateshead, this Saturday and we will see where we are after that."
