High-flying Mariners brush past a poor Welling side.
2 goals in the first half were enough to see Grimsby Town close the gap between themselves and league leaders, Barnet, to just 1 point.
Loan-man Ollie Palmer gave the Mariners the lead after a superb ball from midfield maestro, Scott Brown, fell to the feet of Nathan Arnold, who played a nice pass across goal for Palmer to calmly slot home and give Grimsby the lead after just 6 minutes.
Grimsby had another close call later when a failed Welling clearance sat up perfectly for Arnold who blazed it just over the bar.
Nathan Arnold was at the heart of the action once more, as Grimsby had a penalty appeal swiftly waved away by referee, David Rock. Two Welling players seemed to allowing the ball trickle back to goalkeeper, Jonathan Henly, saw Arnold squeeze between them and make a lunge for the ball. The Grimsby winger fell to the ground after some contact from Welling defenders, Barney Williams and Michael Chambers.
There was another penalty appeal to follow, but this time at the other end. Welling's new loan signing,
Tashan Adeyinka exposed a gap in the Grimsby defence and ran through, whilst being chased by Grimsby defender, Toto Nsiala. Adeyinka was floored whilst the assistant referee flagged for a penalty to be given. The referee didn't agree, and after a length discussion, came to the conclusion that it was not a penalty.
Mariners skipper, Craig Disley, sped through numerous Welling challenges before his attempted pass to Lenell John-Lewis was blocked. The ball then fell for Arnold again, who forced a good save from the Welling keeper, after a well struck volley.
Just 2 minutes before half-time, the Mariners doubled their advantage after Nathan Arnold's corner met the head of centre back, Shaun Pearson, who directed his header past Henly.
HT: Welling United 0-2 Grimsby Town
Welling started the second half brightly. They hit the crossbar early on in the second half thanks to Dominic Vose's looping 20-yard free-kick.
The Wing's rarely threatened in the second half, but their first corner of the game produced a good chance as Michael Chambers rose to meet a well delivered corner. However, James McKeown was on hand to tip the ball over the bar.
The loud 620 travelling Grimsby fans erupted with joy late on in the second half as former Grimsby player and youth team star, Bradley Wood, equalised against Barnet, to close the gap between Grimsby and league leaders, Barnet to just one point.
There was another loud roar from the Grimsby faithful as they saw the referee blow the full-time whistle and confirm that the 3 points will be heading back to Blundell Park.
